Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), in cooperation with Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), conducted the prestigious Oman Collegiate Programming Contest (OCPC-2016) om April 26-27, 2016. The objective of this regional competition was to provide college students with opportunities to interact with fellow students from other universities as well as to sharpen and demonstrate their problem-solving, programming, and teamwork skills. The winning team from each regional contest would advance to the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest – WORLD FINALS. Six (6) students from IbriCT, all under the IT Department’s Bachelor in Software Engineering specialization, formed two teams for this competition. There were a total of 40 teams who participated from all over Oman. Participants were given a set of 10 problems to solve either by using C++ or Java with a time limit of 5 hours. Teams were ranked according to the most number of problems solved. In case of a tie, where 2 or more teams solved the same number of problems, ranking was done by considering the Least Total Time, or the sum of all the time consumed for each problem solved, measured as the elapsed time from the beginning till submission of the “accepted run”, with a penalty of additional 20 minutes for every rejected runs. Participations in competitions like this was a very good experience for our students. The department and college management wishes that our students would participate more in competitions like to boost add to their experience and exposure.
