L1 Phonology in L2 Class: Revisiting Pronunciation Targets and Instructions
Abstract

Teaching the pronunciation of English to froing language learners was argued to have been based on native-speaker norms, particularly the Received Pronunciation (RP) and General American (GA). This presentation negotiates the targets of teaching the pronunciation of English to Arab learners. It provides recommendations about the role of learners' L1 phonology (over imitating native speaker norms) in improving the intelligibility of Arab speakers to native and non-native users of English in cross-cultural communication.
