The English Language Centre aims to develop students' linguistic proficiency by promoting active learning and the use of English through extensive practice in all the language skills needed in various academic situations and the labour market. It also aims to enable students to attain an advanced level competency in critical thinking skills, communication skills, and study skills.
The English Language Programme is divided into two parts; Foundation and Post-Foundation. The Foundation Programme consists of four levels: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. Students in each level study the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, except in Level 4 where students study the skills of language and projects. Upon successful completion of the Foundation Programme, students continue on to their specialisations in the Post-Foundation Programme.
Once in the specialisation or Post-Foundation level, students continue to take courses from the English Language Centre: Technical Writing I, Technical Writing II, Technical Communication and Public Speaking, which are all required as part of their qualification. There is a plan to start ESP courses in the Post-Foundation Programme in the near future. There will be English for Engineering; English for Business; and English for Information Technology. These courses will enrich the learner with terminology related to his area of specialisation and consequently facilitate the process of learning. Material of such courses will be selected in cooperation between the English Language Centres and the concerned department in the Post-Foundation Programme.
