Staff Professional Development organized a training workshop for Level 4 Students and Teachers, as well on Thursday 27.9.2018  about "How to conduct a survey for beginners" Our guest speaker Ms. Rachel Kim Eng. Wong from Malaysia talked about how important to collect data and construct a questionnaire that students can use to prove their hypothesis in their projects. She showed them different types of surveys and simple scales as beginners. At the end, Dr. Miriam Cordova (Level 4 Coordinator) handed over the certificate and trophy to Ms. Rachel.

Staff Professional Development Committee, ELC, IBRICT organized a training workshop by guest speaker from Ukraine Ms. Svitlana Kobzar on Tuesday 11.10.2018 at 12:15 PM in VIP room. The title was” Teaching and Learning Interrelations as Motivational Factors in TEFL”. At the end, Dr. Sultan Al Ghafri (HoC) said such workshops will affect our teaching learning process and learning outcomes of the ELC. Then, he and Ms. Heba Al Qureshi (SPD committee member) handed over the certificate, shield and trophy to our guest speaker. Ms. Svitlana Kobzar worked as a Senior lecturer of English at Zhytomyr State Technological University in Ukraine. Her interests are research skills, motivation, and ELT drama. She is currently working in Baraa’m Al Dhahirah Bilingual school- Ibri, Oman.

Based on the pursuit of the Ministry of Manpower (Ibri College of Technology) to formally create a mutually beneficial working relationship with the professional bodies, and the desire of officials in College of Applied Science (CAS) Ibri to achieve the same purpose, the administration of the two colleges signed a programme of cooperation agreement. The two colleges encourage cooperation in: providing training chances for the college students, exchanging experiences, training programmes, studies and projects ideas between the two parties, promoting cooperation through the establishment of a variety of outreach activities in cooperation between the two parties, mutual support by the two parties to the events related to this area in case of availability of the necessary facilities and approvals, as well as any other aspects to be agreed upon between the two parties.

With reference to the Technical Report Writing Course offered to ARA Petroleum, an H2S training program was conducted at Ibri College of Technology date 12 September 2018. Mr Said Al-Habsi is an HSE (Health and Safety Environment) Instructor at Ray International Skills Development LLC. Mascut. He graduated from Central Lancashire University in (HSEM) Health and Safety Environment Management.UK. He has a vast experience of working in HSE as HSE Supervisor and HSE specialist in different companies. Currently he is working at Ray Intl. as an HSE trainer for the past two years. He was approached by ARA Petroleum to deliver the H2S awareness course to the nominated staff of ELC. Following staff members from ELC attended the training:

3. Ms Mariette Oberholzer

4. Dr. Mohssen Amiri

 

The training started at 10:00 am and it ended at 1:00 pm. The training session was very effective and the attendees learnt a lot about H2S and health and safety. It was an interactive session and the attendees were provided with individual as well as group activities. 

 

Following is the outline of the training course that included:

 

• What are Hazards and Risk, 

• The Difference between Hazards and Risk

• The consequences of possible risks and how to avoid them

• Four common sources of H2S in the oil and gas industry

• The properties of H2S

• The standard H2S exposure limits, seven steps to be taken (in the correct order) in an H2S emergency

• Demonstration of two common rescue drags/carries; Collar Drag, Two-Arm Drag and Two-Men Drag

• Three types of electronic gas detectors ;Personal Monitors, Portable hand-held monitors and Remote or fixed-head monitors

• Lower & Upper Explosive Limits for Flammable Gases & Vapors.

• The operational range of LEL and UEL

• Equipment spacing for well servicing conventional wells

 

At the end of the course, the participants attempted a short quiz to verify the level of learning. 

 

The instructor showed a practical example of H2S emergency escape as he had brought H2S breathing apparatus known as escape kit. Mr Mohssen volunteered to wear it for the demonstration and the trainer guided meanwhile. 

 

Overall, the training was full of learning and the participants benefited a lot. Feedback was taken and the training ended with a group photo.

The English Language Centre (ELC) organized a Vocabulary Gala Competition for students, for the first time on June 12, 2018 in classroom 2017. Mr. Mohammad Amir was the organizer of the competition and Ms. Rahma Al-Alawi, Ms. Maha Al-Darei, Mr. Khalid Al-Gharibi, Ms. Sharon Ruth, Ms. Fazilat Jahan and Dr. Michelle I. Mendoza were the advisers.

 

Initially, Mr.Mohammed Amir prepared lists of vocabulary with their meanings and their use in sentences, and posted them in Level 3 and 4 classrooms for three weeks and requested students to memorize them. At the end of three weeks, six teams got together and trained for the competition with the help of their adviser.

On June 12, the six teams had a written test at 10 am in the VIP Room. After that, the competition began with five selected teams at 11:00 am, in classroom 2017. Ms.Rahma Al-Alawi and Mr. Mohsin were the anchors, whereas Mr. Sulaiman Al-Gharibi, Dr. M.V. Priya and Ms. Mariette Oberholzer were the judges of the competition. The competition had three rounds: (i) in the first round, the teams had to spell the words correctly (ii) in the second round, they had to give the meanings of the words; (iii) in the last round, the teams had to use the words in sentences. The students answered enthusiastically. Dr. Sultan Al Ghafri and Ms. Badour honoured the event with their presence together with some students and teachers from ELC. 

In the end, Mr. Sulaiman Al-Gharibi announced the results: Team C comprising of Ms. Balqees Al-Kalbani, Ms. Balqees Al-Ghafri & Ms. Aya Al-Maamri got the first position, Team E consisting of Ms. Iman Al-Hinai, Ms. Manal Al-Hinai & Ms. Hajer Al-Badi stood second  and Team D consisting of Ms. Noor Bader Al-Gharibi, Ms. Heba Abdullah Al-Hatmi & Ms. Omaima Al-Shaibani was declared third. On 5th July 2018, Dr. Sultan Al-Ghafri distributed certificates to the winning teams. Ms Badour, Ms Rahma Al-Alawi, Ms Maha Al-Darei, Dr. Michelle I. Mendoza, Ms Sharon Ruth and Mr.Mohammad Amir were also present on this occasion.
