Research Perspectives on Nano Metal Oxides and their Applications
A lecture was presented by Dr. Zulfiqar Ahmed to the Engineering faculty on Thursday, 12 October 2017 between 12.00 noon to 1pm.
Dr. Arthur Davis, Coordinator – Research and Consultancy Committee, welcomed Dr. Zulfiqar Ahmed, Lecturer, Engineering and all the Engineering faculty for the first presentation of the academic year 2017-2018. He appreciated his continuous support and contribution to the committee as well as to the student projects.
Dr. Zulfiqar Ahmed started the session with an introduction to Nano-materials. They are materials whose properties are determined by their shapes and sizes. Their sizes usually ranging from 1 to 100nm. They have a high surface to volume ratio. Their magnetic and catalytic properties, and various synthetic routes for synthesis of Nano metal oxides in the form of powder as well as thin films were discussed.
The applications of Nano-materials find wide spectrums such as:
- Electronics
- Nano-biology
- Metrology
- Process materials
- Sensors
The major discussion was on use of Nano metal oxides in environmental pollution control (air and water pollution), Suspended Particle Device smart windows and fuel cells. Participants raised questions on commercial applications like Nano T-shirts and Nano robots for controlling asthma. The limitations in using Nano materials were also addressed.
The lecture was highly informative and beneficial to all the faculty members from various fields of specialization. It created an awareness in the field of nanotechnology among the participants.
