The third one-day workshop on "Scopes on Renewable Energy Systems and its Applications", (SORESA'17)" was organized by the Research and Consultancy Committee, Engineering Department. The workshop was held on 20 November 2017 from 10.00am to 01.00 pm at the Lecture Theatre of the Engineering Department.

The welcome address was delivered by Mr. Nasser Al Shammakhi, head of the Engineering Department. It was followed by a guest lecture. Dr. M Ramasamy, Technical Expert, Royal Court Affairs, Sultanate of Oman, delivered the guest lecture on Renewable Energy Applications with focus on Potential Applications of Solar Energy in Oman.

He addressed the need of an integrated approach to renewable energy solutions. He raised concerns of rapid increase in carbon dioxide emissions with increased electricity consumption and exponential growth in population. He stated that fossil fuels – oil, gas and coal – continue to dominate electricity generation but these are limited and fast depleting, hence the need for focus on renewable energy that can be harnessed through wind and solar energy in Oman. These resources are non-depleting and hence are the most suitable choice for sustainable development.

He also stated that the GCC countries have projects planned close to 200 billion pounds. As wind energy is limited in Oman, he stressed the need to harness solar energy through photovoltaics.

This was followed by students’ presentations on Wind Tunnel Fabrication for Wind Energy Optimization and on Solar Panel Cleaners. Mr J. Arthur Davis gave a presentation on Research and Development Priorities on Renewable Energy. The program concluded with a vote of thanks. Students and staff who participated in the workshop greatly benefitted from the program.
