A guest lecture was organized by the Research and Consultancy Committee, Engineering Department on “Exploring Research Projects on Water Distribution System in PAEW”. The program was held on 8 November 2017, from 10am to 11am in the Multipurpose Hall of the Engineering Department.

Mr. Suleiman Ali Salim Al Abri, Operations Manager, Public Authority of Electricity and Water (PAEW) delivered the talk along with his team of engineers from electrical, instrumentation and mechanical specializations. The team discussed at length the various operations and maintenance work carried out in the Al-Dahirah region above and below ground level to supply potable water to the residents, the 57 Bore wells in Wadl Al Ayn well fields and the pumping capacity of the pumps. They also briefed on 11 ground storage reservoirs where the water from the wells is stored prior to being supplied to the consumers.

The team also talked about standby generators that provide 24 hours pumping if there was electricity failure. The capacity of submersible pumps is from 1HP to 100 HP. Forwarding pumps using 11KV high voltage motors, vacuum circuit breakers and capacitor banks with high dielectric strength materials are used to maintain such high voltages.

They addressed that the On-load and Off-load Tap Changer (OLTF) in the secondary side of transformer was not working in auto-mode which lead to serious voltage fluctuations. Therefore, they requested possible study and solutions from the experts in this field. This was followed by a lively question and answer section, which greatly benefited the audience.
