Road Safety Awareness Programme

The Health and Safety Committee of the Engineering Department organised a “Road Safety” awareness programme on 24 March 2019 from 08am to 08.30am in Room B112 and on 25 March 2019 from 10am to 10.30am in the Room B111 for the Second Year Diploma students.

The speakers of the programme were Mr S. Manikandan and Dr Alfred Franklin, who explained the procedures and precautions to be taken while driving to create an awareness on road safety and how to avoid road traffic accidents (RTA).

They presented the annual analytical report on the increasing rate of road accidents in Oman. This includes speeding and poor driving aptitudes and are the main causes of road accidents in Oman. Some of the following analytical data was explained to the students. Accident rates in 2016 dropped compared to 2015, however, the death rate increased, especially among expatriate drivers. A total of 692 deaths occurred in 2016, compared to 675 in 2015, a 2.5% increase. In the case of expatriates, the fatality rate rose by 16.1%  as 252 died in 2016, compared to 217 in 2015. On the other hand, the number of Omanis dying in such accidents fell by 3.9 per cent, as 440 nationals died in 2016, compared to 458 the year before. Moreover, he stressed the significance of speed control, wearing seatbelts and other relevant forces acting on vehicles, with the help of PPT and videos.
