Workshop on Big Data Fundamentals in Nutshell at Nizwa College of Technology

Five members from IT Department of Ibri College of Technology attended the One Day workshop on Big Data Fundamentals in Nutshell at Nizwa College of Technology (NCT) on 12/09/2019

It was organized by IT Department of NCT and conducted by Dr. Mohammed Faisal and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Lecturers at IT Department in NCT. Other participants were from Ibra College of Technology, Higher College of Technology and NCT.

Initially the HoS, and HoD of the IT department gave a welcome note and congratulated the faculty members for organizing the workshop.

The workshop was especially for the teachers who are handling or about to handle the course Fundamentals of Big Data- ITDB304. The contents of the sessions were prepared as per the outcomes of the course and delivered accordingly.

In the first session, Dr. Faisal discussed about the Big Data Fundamentals and introduced the audience with Hadoop framework. He discussed the internal storage structure of HDFS and whole ecosystem. After that he gave details of how to set up the hadoop environment.

In next session, Dr Sanjay Gupta gave an overview of MapReduce programming paradigm and conducted the hands on lab activity for word counting problems. He has shared some other programs to be explored by the participants.

Dr Faisal started the new session after the lunch where he introduced the participants to Hive which is used to query databases created in HDFS. He introduced NoSQL databases and discussed hands on HBase basics and NoSQL nature of it.

The workshop really helped our faculty members to get an insight to initiate the establishment of big data lab environment and enough information to deliver the course "Fundamentals of big data".

In the end, the HoD Dr. Rolando Lontok Jr. distributed certificates to all the participants. Feedback was collected from all the participants and the workshop was concluded.
