Mr Yaseen Al-Yaqoobi, a team leader for maintenance of Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel), visited Ibri College of Technology on 13 February 2018 to deliver a lecture in the Engineering Free Access Lab on the networking structure of Oman. Around 20 Engineering students and a few staff members, including Mr Nasser Al-Shammakhi (Head of Department), were present. He was accompanied by a couple of his colleagues from Omantel and staff members from IbriCT’s On the Job Training office.

He presented the new project of Omantel, Fibre to the Home, wherein certain feasible areas and localities will be provided with new high speed, high fidelity data service via fibre optic cables.

He emphasised that as much as they want to provide each costumer the service that customers demand on having, it would depend much on the balance between the need for speed of connection versus quality of service versus budget or package the costumer is willing to spend. Also, he informed that for Omantel to provide a new ADSL service line to a new area, it would cost the company at least 1000 OMR. Therefore, they will only install a new line if it is feasible and there are multiple applicants needing the line in the area.

Maintenance of the physical assets and facilities, on the other hand, is done on a case to case basis. Mostly, they do repair work of lines that were damaged due to road or highway construction, building or infrastructure construction, damage by people who intentionally cut the lines, and so on.

Network maintenance and assistance are available to customers via the Omantel Call Centre where their agents will help in addressing customer complaints and inquiries.
