Industrial Visit to Omantel, Ibri

The Industrial link committee of Information Technology Department arranged an industrial visit on Thursday, March 30, 2017 to Omantel, Ibri through the OJT coordinator Mr. Junath Nasser Ahmed. The objective of this visit was to provide and show real time operations and maintenance of Omantel telecommunication system to the students of ‘Principles of Data Telecommunications’ course.

It was a three hour visit to Ibri earth station and telecommunication exchange. Mr. Ali al Alawi presented the operations, maintenance activities and future plans of Omantel, Ibri branch earth station. Mr.Ali also introduced the officials of Omantel to the students for interaction. Students actively participated in this interaction and felt very satisfied. After presentation, the students were taken to Omantel exchange located on the Ibri souk road.

Mr. Qassim Mohammed Rashid Al Maamari explained the operations of the old analog telephone system to today’s modern telecommunication system including the wireless communication system, live on Omantel. The students visited the whole exchange to observe the real-time operations and the automatic switching and high speed transmission devices and their operations. The students collected some samples of various types of cables and wires including fibre optic cable used in the transmission high way. The visit concluded at 11:30 am with the commitment of future support by Omantel in connection with student’s training and technical support

. A total of 12 students were accompanied by Mr. Prabu Arockiyaraj (Course Teacher) and Ms. Samia Al Yaqooibi, IT Department coordinator.

The students were satisfied with the alignment of their course and industrial visit. They were very happy in learning the new things in alignment with the course. The course teachers of this course Mr. Prabu and Ms. Roselle showed interest in collaborating this course with the industrial visit. The outcome of this visit was to give a clear idea on the latest trends in telecommunication technologies and operations of telecommunication exchange.
