The Business Studies Department, represented by Mr Mohammed Al-Sakiti, participated in the First National Symposium on “Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Oman” on Monday, 16 April 2018, at Muscat College. The symposium consisted of three main sessions. In the opening session, the keynote speaker, Ms. Sharifa Al Barami, Managing Director, Oman Technology Fund, gave a speech on the key elements that make both entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial eco-systems successful.

The second session emphasized how entrepreneurship can foster Oman’s economic diversification. Four professional speakers from different institutions, including Vision 2040 Office, SME Development Fund, Riyada and Sharakah, shared their experiences with the audience. They mainly focused on the Omani entrepreneurship ecosystem, the role of institutions in supporting Omani entrepreneurs, the available financial and non-financial services for entrepreneurs and how entrepreneurship can move forward in Oman.

The third session was a panel discussion emphasizing the key challenges of Omani entrepreneurs. Four panelists shared both success and failure stories with the participants. Two of the panelists were real entrepreneurs and they inspired the audience on how they dealt with various challenges in their journeys. The symposium was very successful and was a valuable opportunity for sharing knowledge between academics, institutions, entrepreneurs and students.
