The Health and Safety Committee organised an awareness programme on fire safety and first aid for administrative staff on 15 November 2018. The event was held in the VIP room from 10.30 to 11.30am. Mr. Khalifa Al Alawi and Dr K. Elangovan presented the need for fire safety and precautions to be followed to eliminate fire accidents. During the presentation, the classification of fire and different types of firefighting equipment used to extinguish fire were discussed. Staff were also briefed on first aid procedures to be followed in case of fire injuries. After the presentation, Mr Sathyendran, technician, demonstrated the use of different types of fire extinguishers in case of fire. Some staff members also practiced application of firefighting equipment on a demonstrated fire. The presentation was well received by the staff members.

The Health and Safety Committee organised an awareness programme on eye care for staff and students on 14 November 2018. The event was held in the Lecture Theatre from 8.30 to 11am.

Dr Muna Mubarak, Ophthalmology section, Ibri Regional Hospital, was the resource person. The doctor focused on the importance of eye care and general procedures to be followed on eye care. She presented a few eye problems like dry eyes, inflammation of eyelids and strabismus with causes and remedies.

 

Dry eye is the state in which a person feels a burning sensation in his eyes due to the decrease in production of tears. It is caused by aging and misuse of medication. Artificial eye drops in place of natural tears as well as tear-stimulating drugs is the remedy for this problem.

 

Inflammation of eye lids is the swelling of eye lids when there is inflammation or excess fluid in the connective tissues surrounding the eye. Swollen eye lids are due to allergies, bacteria and so on. Prescribed ointment for the eye lids and antibiotics are two common treatments for the inflammation of eye lids.

 

Strabismus is the misalignment of the two eyes when one eye is focused on an object while the other eyes is aligned inwards, outwards, upwards or downwards. This problem occurs due to muscle eye weakness, nervous system weakness and poor eyesight. During the initial stages of the treatment, a few exercises are conducted in order to improve eye sight and glasses are prescribed according to the intensity of the Strabismus. In extreme cases, eye surgery is conducted to strengthen the muscles of the eye.

 

After the presentation, a preliminary vision screening test was conducted for students and staff. Thirty-four students and staff benefitted from this and a few students were advised to consult eye specialists for further treatment and vision correction. The eye care programme was well received by the staff members and students.

The IT Department, through the Staff Development Committee, conducted a workshop about “Student Centred Learning” on 27 November 2018 in Room C004, Ibri College of Applied Sciences. The speaker for the event was Ms Iman Al Jassasi, lecturer in the IT Department, Ibri College of Technology. Mr Ahmed Nitash, Lecturer in the IT Section, assisted the speaker by helping the participants in doing the Course Delivery Plan (CDP) activity. The objectives of this workshop were to design an effective Course Delivery Plan by including SCL approaches and to link SCL Approaches with Bloom’s Taxonomy.

  During the workshop the speaker emphasised the following significant points: 

1. The definition of SCL

2. The researches which discussed SCL

3. SCL Approaches

4. Bloom’s Taxonomy

5. Effective CDP

The workshop was well organised by the SDC of both Ibri College of Technology and Ibri College of Applied Sciences. The speaker interacted with the participants and explained the concepts clearly. Groups which distributed according to their teaching course. The workshop was conducted smoothly and each group of participates presented the points requested in the activity. A number of staff members of the department attended and had the opportunity to discuss questions with the speaker. The event ended at 1:20pm. The Program feedback is 4.5 score

The Business Society organized MONOLITH 2018, an intercollegiate competition, on 26 November 2018. In all, six Colleges of Technologies participated in this event which comprised of three competitions viz.

Business Puzzle, 

Bloom’s Pyramid and 

Firm’s logo

The program started at 10 am by inauguration from business society member, welcoming all the participants of various Colleges, HOS, HOD and ADAA, for MONOLITH 2018.  

The first event was Business Puzzle, which was conducted by Mr. Mohammed Sakiti, lecturer, Business Department. This competition was organized with the purpose of testing the students’ knowledge on Oman’s Economy and current economic scenario. Six teams with 3 participants in each group participated.  The quiz master of Business Puzzle started by explaining the rules and regulations of the competition. It had three stages, with elimination of two teams with least score at the end of each stage. Only two teams were designed to qualify to the third and final stage of this competition. Nizwa College of Technology bagged the honours and the Higher College of Technology took the second position. 

The second event was the Bloom’s Pyramid which was conducted by Mr Sandeep Kale, lecturer, Business Department. This event was designed with the objective of testing the students in 6 different cognitive levels of Remembering, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation and Creation. Here also six teams participated with 3 participants in each team. The quiz master started by explaining the rules and regulations of the program. This event had 6 rounds of quizzing in line with the cognitive levels in the pyramid. There were two eliminations, one at the end of the second round and the other one at the end of round four. At each elimination, two teams with the least scores were eliminated and only two teams advanced to the final stages of the competition. The Higher College of Technology bagged the honours here and Shinas College of Technology took the second spot.

The last event of this program was a Firm’s Logo designing competition in which the participating teams had to design a logo for a Business Firm.  This event was conducted by Dr Vishwanath and Dr Mohd. Abed Ali, both lecturers from Business Department. The objective of this event was to assess the student’s creativity skills. Here also five teams with 2 participants in each team participated.  The competition organizers started it by explaining the rules and regulations of the program. It had two stages, with three teams getting eliminated at the end of round one. The remaining two teams advancing to the final stage. All the teams tried their best to bring in a complex mixture of design skills, creative theory and skillful application in designing their Logo.  In the end, the prized winner was Nizwa College of Technology while Shinas College of Technology secured the second spot.

The program ended at 3 pm with the closing ceremony initiated by society’s president, thanking all the Colleges for participation. HOD Dr.Nasser Al Kalbani and Ms. Safiya al Hamdi, HOS and Chairman, Business Society awarded prizes to the winners with mementoes and certificate.  All the participants of various Colleges were given certificate of participation. The event was rounded off by awarding all the members of the Business Society and the student organizers wonderful team of boys and girls for their untiring efforts in making this event a grand success.

The Electrical and Electronics Section of the Engineering Department, together with the Engineering Society, scheduled a three-day workshop titled, “Workshop on MATLAB and Signal Processing Applications”, on 16, 23, and 30 October 2018, three consecutive Tuesdays, from 12 noon to 2pm at the AutoCAD Laboratory (B117).

The workshop was organised based on the positive feedback and demand from the students to have a similar workshop, as the topics discussed would help them in carrying out their projects with ease.

The main objectives of the course were to:

• provide a mathematical framework for describing and analysing signals, images and videos as 2-D and 3-D signals in the spatial, spatio-temporal, and frequency domains, 

• understand the use of MATLAB and Signal/Image Processing Toolbox through examples and exercises, and

• provide hands-on experience with the software to perform exercises on various applications.

 

The following aspects were covered in the three-day workshop:

• Familiarisation with Image Processing Concepts

• Using MATLAB IP toolbox

• Importing, exporting, analysing and enhancing images

• Noise Removal, Deblurring and Histogram Equalization

• Error Trouble shooting and Debugging Techniques

Dr Rehna Veerankutty served as the resource person. Teaching and learning methods included lecture sessions, demonstrations, practical sessions, and exercises/assignments.

Twenty-two (22) students who have successfully carried out the workshop tasks and generated working outputs were awarded with a certificate of participation.

REPORT ON FUSION 360 WORKSHOP

Fusion 360 is a cloud-based CAD/CAM/CAE tool for collaborative product development. Fusion 360 combines fast and easy solid modelling and assembly of machine components. It allows for making designs manufacturable and generating CNC programs which are used directly in CNC machines. From the Engineering Department (M&I section), 21 students attended and benefitted from this programme. On the first day, the students learnt how to create a basic sketch and turn this into a fully working assembly, and on the second day students practiced with the CAM module and developed a CNC program for a CNC milling machine.

The Electrical and Electronics Section of the Engineering Department, together with the Engineering Society, scheduled a three-day workshop for Arduino, “Workshop on Arduino Primer”, last 2, 9, and 16 October 2018; on three consecutive Tuesdays, 12 noon to 2pm, in the Electronics Skills Laboratory (B105).

 

Due to the positive and enthusiastic response after a similar workshop on Arduino was conducted in January to February 2018, there was a demand to hold another series for those who were not accommodated at that time.

 

The series was shortened from being a four-day workshop to three days wherein the following aspects were covered:

 

• Familiarisation with the Arduino Board and Pin Details

• Setting up the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE)

• Loading Sketch Using the Arduino Uno

• Using the Loop Statement for SOS Morse Code Signaler and Traffic Light Control

• Interfacing with the Piezo Buzzer, Temperature Sensor LM35, LDR, and IR Sensor

 

Mr Abdul Hafeez Sajid and Mr Reddy Ganesh served as the resource persons. They were assisted by students who served as workshop facilitators: Hajer Hamed Said Al Bahri, Bedoor Hamood Al Mammari, and Majdi Qasim Ali Al Azri.

 

Only 24 students, those who have successfully carried out the workshop tasks and generated working outputs, were awarded with a certificate of participation.

As per requirement by Quality Assurance Department that there should be a student organisation in the Engineering Department, the Engineering Student Council has been formed under the supervision of the Engineering Society.  It is hoped that the Engineering Student Council will help bring about positivity that will benefit the entire Engineering Department student population. 

 

As a student organisation, the council can:

·                     give a collective opinion of the student body in matters that affect the students;

·                     present proposals for activities, events, and programmes that are of interest of the students; and

·                     constitute a roster of students from whom the Engineering Department can choose from to represent the college and department in various seminars, workshops, competitions, forums, etc.

 

Being an official member of the Engineering Student Council, the student,

·                     can, upon personal request, be issued a Certificate of Membership; with all activity involvements cited.

·                     can have an opportunity to learn and practice some leadership, management, organisational, and social skills.

·                     can have the chance to be chosen as a representative of the department or college and earn certificates.

·                     can improve their resume when applying for a job.

·                     can have an avenue to showcase their skills and talents.

·                     can have the opportunity to contribute for the betterment and prestige of the department and the college.

·                     can get to know more students in the department; promote more lasting friendships and future linkages or networks.

The E-learning Committee of the Engineering Department organised a presentation the advantages of Turnitin software on 15 November 2018 from 1pm to 1.30pm in Room B010 of the Engineering Department. This programme is aimed at creating awareness about the various advantages of Turnitin software and also to enable students to utilise Turnitin software effectively and efficiently. 

Mr D. Prasanna Venkatesh, E-learning Coordinator of the Engineering Department, explained the essential and useful key features about Turnitin software and how it is integrated into E-learning and Moodle. This presentation brought more insight into the Turnitin software and its effective use. The students felt that the presentation was very useful, informative and effective.
