The Staff Research and Consultancy Committee of the Business Studies Department organized a presentation on “Enhancing Student-Centered Learning Environment” last March 20, 2017.

Dr. Syeda Zubaida Hashmi, the speaker of the said presentation, explained the scope of SCL. According to the speaker, SCL is a wide variety of educational programs, learning experiences, instructional approaches, and academic-support strategies that are intended to address the distinct learning needs, interests, aspirations, or cultural backgrounds of individual students and groups of students. She also highlighted Student-Centered Instruction [SCI] as an instructional approach in which students influence the content, activities, materials, and pace of learning. Furthermore, she explained that in an SCL classroom, the instructor provides students with opportunities to learn independently and from one another and coaches them in the skills they need to work effectively. Moreover, the SCL approach includes such techniques as substituting active learning experiences for lectures, assigning open-ended problems and problems requiring critical or creative thinking that cannot be solved by following text examples.

Dr. Hashmi also emphasized in her presentation that when SCL is properly implemented in the class, it can increase motivation to learn, increase retention of knowledge, gain deeper understanding, and achieve more positive attitudes towards the subject being taught (Collins & O'Brien, 2003). Moreover, the speaker explained the SCL classroom approaches, management expectations and students’ understanding and needs.

Mr. Mohammed Abed Ali, Head of the Department, Dr. Sanjay Saha, Head of the Human Resource Section, and Ms. Safiya Al Hamdi, Head of the Accounting Section led the said event.
