The Staff Development Committee of the Engineering Department organised a programme on AutoCAD Fusion on 4 June 2018 from 12.00 noon to 01.00pm.
Dr V Sivananth, Lecturer, Mechanical Section, Engineering Department, delivered a presentation on AutoCAD Fusion. He started his presentation with an introduction about the key features of the software. He also explained the effective use of this modelling software to create basic to complex models using simple commands. He explained the relation between AutoCAD and this software.
He described about the various applications of AutoDesk modelling in different fields. A brief explanation was also given about the automatic coding development though this software, applicable for CNC machines.
The programme was well received by the staff and highly beneficial to the participants.
Dr Naveed Hussain, Lecturer, Department of Engineering, delivered an inspiring talk on the topic “Research Scopes on Renewable Energy Applications” on behalf of the Research and Consultancy Committee of the Engineering Department on 10 May 2018 from 1:30 to 2:00pm.
He highlighted the importance of research on photovoltaics, developing better solar collectors and solar concentrators to tap the sun’s energy. He discussed the latest developments in Bio Hybrid Solar cells whose electrical current output is 1000 times that of conventional solar cells. These cells have been manufactured in laboratories by injecting a complex protein from spinach leaves. He also briefly touched upon the improvements made in infra-red plastic solar cells that are flexible and not rigid like the conventional solar panels. Hybrid models such as Solar-Wind Hybrid Power and Solar-Diesel Hybrid Power were also addressed.
He gave a brief outline on how to calculate a budget proposal for getting adequate funding and research. The talk was well received by the audience with a very wide applause and appreciation for the inspiration given.
Dr Sujata S. Panicker, Lecturer, Department of Engineering, delivered a lecture on the topic “Future Energy Resources – Plasma” on behalf of the Research and Consultancy Committee of the Engineering Department on 10 May from 2:00 to 2:30pm.
She explained “plasma” as a highly ionised gas that is a separate and distinct fourth state other than naturally occurring states of solids, liquids and gases. Such states of matter are rarely seen on the earth during lightning and burning of fluorescent tubes. However, such plasma exists in abundance in our universe. Also 99% of our universe is made of plasma with stars as one of the primary sources of plasma.
However recently scientists have proven the feasibility of generating plasma inside a short pulse magnetic machine called as TFTR and JET. The goal of making such a reactor is to heat plasma up to 100 million degrees Celsius that is seven times hotter than the centre of the sun. At such high temperatures, hydrogen atoms begin to fuse into helium. These reactions happen at the centre of the sun under extremely high temperatures and high pressures.
She stated that generation of such plasma (according to ITER Consortium) offers the potential of being “environmentally benign”, widely applicable and essentially inexhaustible electricity that can meet the increase in the world energy demands. The talk was well received by all the staff in the audience. This was followed by a brief question and answer session.
The Engineering Department held its first Career Guidance Programme with all Exit Level Engineering Students in attendance. The programme hopes to help students prepare better for job hunting and be better equipped once they enter the job market.
Dr V. Ilankumaran, Head of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Section, gave some welcoming remarks and stated the importance of being good ambassadors of the college in their future work places.
Dr K. Elangovan, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Section, shared some useful tips regarding how to look for possible employment, how to prepare for an interview and aptitude test, and such matters.
The department also enlisted the help of the English Language Centre (ELC) to lecture on the proper way of writing a Curriculum Vitae (CV). Mr Sulaiman Al-Ghareebi, an ELC staff member, reviewed the students on what elements and information must be found in the CV and how to properly lay it out.
The Staff Development Committee of the Engineering Department organised a programme on “PLC Programming” on 24 May 2018 from 12pm to 1pm.
Mr Srilla Jayasankar, Instructor, Electrical and Electronics, conducted the programme.
This awareness programme focused on the importance of programmable logic controllers, which are extensively used in automation industries. This kind of automation software plays a vital role in developing the nation. In this regard, he explained the basic programming techniques to write a ladder logic program. He also narrated the method of writing simple programmes with the help of an example taken from real time practical application.
This program was well received by the staff and highly beneficial to the participants.
The Staff Development Committee, ELC organized a training workshop on Bloom's Taxonomy on the 22nd of May 2018. Mr. Joseph Vadakel and Mr. Jose Chandapillai (ELC Staff Members) conducted it. They said “Bloom's Taxonomy is one the big challenges teachers face when teaching receptive skill". Dr. Sultan (Head of ELC) emphasized that Bloom's Taxonomy is so crucial in setting learning outcomes and deciding assessment tools. Mr. Faisal Shamali, Head of Staff Development Committee stated that Bloom's Taxonomy theory has developed its relevance to planning the lessons and testing students leaning achievements. At the end, Ms. Sharon Ruth (ELC Senior Lecturer) handed over the certificates to the presenters.
The Mechanical Engineering Section held their Project Orientation Programme on 8 May 8 2018, immediately after the conduct of the Career Guidance Programme, in the Multi-Purpose Hall, at around 1:30pm.
Dr. K. Elangovan and Dr. Thiumavalavan spoke about following the proper project making process and on working efficiently and effectively because the current semester has been cut short due to Ramadan. They explained the grading criteria and how the final marks will be computed.
The Staff Development Committee of the Information Technology department organised a Seminar on Exposure on Graph Labelling by Dr N Shanmugpriya, Lecturer, Mathematics, Information Technology Department, IBRICT on 15 May 2018 from 12:00 to 1:00pm in Lab 1 of the Department of Information Technology.
Dr Shanmugpriya started with introduction to graceful labelling. She first discussed the famous Alexander Rosa, 1967 paper on graph labelling and his graceful tree conjecture to tune the audience to the actual problem. Then she discussed various research contributions to prove graceful tree conjecture in different types of graphs. She explained some proofs with actual examples.
The seminar saw a very fruitful and constructive discussion in the end among the audience. Around 15 faculty members from Maths and IT attended the Seminar.
In the end Dr N Shanmugpriya was appreciated for her volunteering efforts to conduct the seminar.
In the end, feedback was collected from members attending the seminar. Majority of them showed satisfaction on the arrangements done. On the scale of five, average feedback is four.
In order to display the technical skills of the IbriCT Engineering students, the annual Technofest was organised by the Engineering Department and the Engineering Society, with the appointed Staff Coordinators, on 14 May 2018.

The Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Mr Younis Al-Zaabi, and Head of the Engineering Department, Mr Nasser Al-Shammakhi, opened the affair with a simple ribbon-cutting ceremony at around 9am, in the Multi-Purpose Hall, marking the official opening of the project display and exhibit, as well as the various Skills Competitions scheduled throughout the day. The Engineering Department, both staff and students, worked hard to make the event as smooth sailing as possible while juggling classes, competitions, and the project display and exhibit, all at the same time. There was a good number of registrants/participants for each skills competition.

The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Section, headed by Dr V. Ilankumaran, held a Project Orientation Programme for Exit Level Students on Wednesday, 9 May 2018, at 11.00 am, in the Multi-Purpose Hall.
The Third Semester 2017-2018 is relatively short due to the Holy Month of Ramadan; and therefore there is a sense of urgency to complete the Project Making Process efficiently and quickly.
Dr Ilankumaran emphasised that students will have to work as a team more this time to finish the project on time properly and correctly. There is also a need to start making the project report incrementally until the end of the semester. He also explained the grading criteria thoroughly so that the students will fully understand how their final grade is calculated.
