IbriCT encourages faculty members and students to meet their research targets through the internal Research Funding Programme from AY 2017-18. A Call for Proposals under RFP is to be published in the month of March of every academic year. Proposals will be reviewed by the RCC in the month of April and recommended to the College Council for approval. The College Council approves the proposals of the research teams.

The research teams will carry out the research for a period of one year and report progress  every six months to the RCC. On completion of one year, the research team would will submit a completion report to the RCC. This process will repeat every academic year.

With reference to the Technical Report Writing Course offered to ARA Petroleum, an H2S training program was conducted at Ibri College of Technology date 12 September 2018. Mr Said Al-Habsi is an HSE (Health and Safety Environment) Instructor at Ray International Skills Development LLC. Mascut. He graduated from Central Lancashire University in (HSEM) Health and Safety Environment Management.UK. He has a vast experience of working in HSE as HSE Supervisor and HSE specialist in different companies. Currently he is working at Ray Intl. as an HSE trainer for the past two years. He was approached by ARA Petroleum to deliver the H2S awareness course to the nominated staff of ELC. Following staff members from ELC attended the training:

The training started at 10:00 am and it ended at 1:00 pm. The training session was very effective and the attendees learnt a lot about H2S and health and safety. It was an interactive session and the attendees were provided with individual as well as group activities. 

 

Following is the outline of the training course that included:

 

• What are Hazards and Risk, 

• The Difference between Hazards and Risk

• The consequences of possible risks and how to avoid them

• Four common sources of H2S in the oil and gas industry

• The properties of H2S

• The standard H2S exposure limits, seven steps to be taken (in the correct order) in an H2S emergency

• Demonstration of two common rescue drags/carries; Collar Drag, Two-Arm Drag and Two-Men Drag

• Three types of electronic gas detectors ;Personal Monitors, Portable hand-held monitors and Remote or fixed-head monitors

• Lower & Upper Explosive Limits for Flammable Gases & Vapors.

• The operational range of LEL and UEL

• Equipment spacing for well servicing conventional wells

 

At the end of the course, the participants attempted a short quiz to verify the level of learning. 

 

The instructor showed a practical example of H2S emergency escape as he had brought H2S breathing apparatus known as escape kit. Mr Mohssen volunteered to wear it for the demonstration and the trainer guided meanwhile. 

 

Overall, the training was full of learning and the participants benefited a lot. Feedback was taken and the training ended with a group photo.

The Staff Development Committee of the Engineering Department organised the third workshop on Bloom’s Taxonomy series on 10 July 2018. This activity-based workshop focused on “Creating and using Rubrics for Performance Assessment”.

Dr Elangovan, HoS (M&I), briefly revised the topics covered in the previous workshop. Then he elaborated about rubrics and their importance in grading and performance assessment. He also discussed different types of rubrics and their advantages.

Dr V. Sivananth, Lecturer (Engineering Department), presented the different stages in rubrics and listed the step-by-step procedure to create rubrics. Sample rubrics for both holistic and analytic types along with performance criteria were discussed during the presentation. 

After that, the faculty members were asked to form the group to perform the rubric creation activity for different courses. The presenter’s efforts were highly appreciated by the faculty members to complete the task on rubric creation.

Ibri College of Technology, along with the different departments, conducted a community programme on 10 July 10 2018.   Six school children who registered, attended the course, “Basic Electrical Wiring Workshop”.  The workshop was held in the Electrical Skills Lab (B020) wherein staff members of the Engineering Department, namely: Mr Chandrashekar M. C. and Mrs Sheikha Al-Mamari, taught them electrical safety and showed them videos regarding electrical safety, common tools and materials used in electrical wiring, and basic electrical wiring techniques.  They did practical work by doing seven exercises.

The Health and Safety committee of Business Studies Department conducted a program on Road safety for its students on Thursday i.e., on 29th January 2018, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in Class Room No C003 and from 2 to 2:30 p.m. in Room number C004. The aim of the program was to enhance the knowledge and awareness of the students on Road safety. 

Mr. Enthiyaz Khan, coordinator of Health and Safety Committee, gave a presentation to 56 students who were present in the program. The following points were discussed at length:

• The rate of road accidents in Oman

• Types of roads accidents in Oman

• Causes for road accidents 

• Primary cause for road accidents

• Difference between 2WD and 4WD

• Types of traffic accidents and collisions

• Collisions-Reasons 

• Why speed kills?

• Who is a good driver and what should be on safety list?

The session was very interesting and interactive.  It empowered the knowledge of audiences on Road safety and created awareness among them about the safety precautions to be taken while on road.

On behalf of the Health and Safety Committee, an awareness programme on “High Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Control Measures with Simple Exercises and Remedies” was conducted to staff of the Business Department 28 June 2018 in room number 91A. In this context, speaker Mr Enthiyaz Khan gave presentation on the meaning of blood pressure, blood pressure chart, the meaning of systolic and diastolic in BP measurement, stages of blood pressure and causes of high blood pressure. Then he also spoke on the meaning of cholesterol, causes for the accumulation of cholesterol in our bodies, levels and ranges of LDL, HDL and triglycerides. He also explained measures to control cholesterol, food for lowering cholesterol, a list of food for bad cholesterol, and some home remedies to reduce cholesterol. After the presentation Mr Khan showed some simple exercises to reduce body fat. After that, Mr Sandeep Kale showed some breathing exercises to get relief from tension, high blood pressure and to reduce cholesterol. The session was very interesting and enriched the knowledge of business staff.

The Health and safety Committee and Risk management Committee Coordinator, Mr Enthiyaz Khan, was the speaker on the topic. In his presentation, he spoke about the Fire Triangle, fire extinguishing basic principles, fire classification, types of fire extinguishers and method of using fire extinguishers, rules of fighting fire, and first aid for fire injury. The presentation was well organised and enriched the knowledge of audience.

On 30 May 2018 an orientation programme on “Fire safety, use of fire extinguishers and creating awareness on evacuation procedures” was conducted by the Health and Safety Committee in collaboration with the Risk Management Committee, Department of Business studies, Ibri College of Technology. The programme was conducted for different levels of Business students.

The objective of the programme was to create awareness among the students of the Business Department.
