The English Language Centre, IbriCT, hosted the 5th English Language Teaching Professional Development Workshop with a thought provoking theme “Strategies for Encouraging, Engaging and Educating Students(SEES-2)” on April 17, 2019 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Ibri College of Technology.

The event commenced with a video of 2018 events. The welcome speech from Dr. Sultan Al- Ghafri, the Head of the ELC sections, extended a warm welcome to the guests, presenters and participants from various colleges and universities in the Sultanate of Oman and abroad. He stated that the English Language Centre at IbriCT has always been an active platform in providing opportunities to English language teacher, practitioners and trainees  to share their expertise and motivate students to enhance their English language skills. Dr. Al Ghafri also assured that the ELC at IbriCT would continue to inspire and provide support to those who want to be part of a knowledge seeking and sharing society. 

Dr Hamdan Al Manthari, Dean of IbriCT, heads of the centers and heads of departments graced the occasion.

Dr.Halima Benzoukh, associate professor from Kasdi Merbah University, Algeria, was the plenary speaker and her talk focused on “Musicality of Teaching English as a Foreign Language.”  She mentioned that finding out strategies to push their learners forward in the learning process, should be the focus of teachers.

As the second plenary speaker, Dr Hashil Al – Saadi, lecturer at the Center for Preparatory Studies at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), gave an interesting talk on “Student Engagement in the learning process” which emphasized on the significance of effective learning.

Lecturers from different universities and colleges shared their expertise through poster presentations, teaching tips, paper presentations and workshops. The workshops were scheduled for 45 minutes, paper presentations and teaching tips were scheduled for 35 minutes.

The teaching fraternity had rich takeaways from the elite gathering.

As a token of appreciation, gifts were distributed among the keynote speakers and presenters. The participants also received their certificates of participation. Mr. Faisal Ibrahim Al Shamali, coordinator of IbriCT Professional Development Committee, headed this year’s  ELT Professional Development Workshop Organizing Committee.

On 25th and 26th of March 2019, a program on Road Safety was conducted for the students of Department of Business Studies in different class rooms by the Health and Safety Committee in collaboration with the Risk Management Committee- Department of Business Studies, Ibri College of Technology.

The objective of the program was to create more awareness on road safety among the students of the Business Department. In this context Mr. Enthiyaz Khan  gave a presentation on road traffic accidents in Oman, types of roads in Oman,  causes for accidents, forces acting on a car, role of speed in accidents, differences between 2WD and 4WD vehicles, types of traffic accidents and collisions. 

He closed his session by explaining safety precautions that drivers and passengers should observe while on the move. The speaker urged the students to be careful while driving and keep away from distractions like mobile phones while on the move. The session was very interesting and enriched the knowledge of students on road safety.

As a part of our health and safety activities, first aid training for the staff was organised on 17 February 2019, in association with Ibri Regional Hospital, Ministry of Health. Emergency Department staff were the resource persons. The procedures of first aid for various health problems like fainting and seizure, which are common issues with students that need first aid treatment, were presented. The experts also explained the procedures to be followed in the following circumstances:

  • Bleeding nose
  • Bites
  • Epilepsy
  • Choking
  • Wounds
  • Burns  
  • CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)

In continuation of the presentation, staff members were given hands-on training on various first aid procedures. A total of ten staff members (three male and seven female) from various departments participated the training programme and gained knowledge on first aid procedures.

This congress invited different IEEE students from the various Gulf States to participate in its activities. One of the participants was the Oman section of the IEEE. The activities involved robotics competitions, projects competition and the several workshops.

Robotics competition:

In this competition, the participants should have a robot which is able to do many tasks in short time. This robot should be able to walk through a dark path by detecting the available light, be able to detect a candle (fire) and turn it off, be able to detect the colours to hold colourful balls and put them in the corresponding colour’s position, be able to hold a rope to reach a bell on the top of a hanging object and make it ring, and able to follow a black line and make a sound when it detects a sound through that line. The best one should perform all that jobs correctly in a short time. The first place in this competition was the team from Al Musannah College of Technology.

Project competition:

In this competition, a project related to Engineering, especially Electronic and Electrical Engineering, was displayed. 

The project topics were the following:

  • Portable Braille Display
  • E-Watch
  • ApproUnity
  • Spectral Mammography with photon Counting Detector for Enhanced Breast Tissue Contrast
  • Mechatronics System
  • Vehicle Management and service Options
  • Automatic BHS System for Offloading Unclaimed Baggage at Airports

Overall, the best project was done by Qatar University.

Conclusion :

This kind of congress is very useful for students for many reasons. Firstly, they help to meet different students and share their experiences with others. Secondly, they help to expand the students’ knowledge by attending several workshops. Finally, it supports students to do their own projects in future. I advise all to join to these congresses to benefit from them.

Attending participants were from various colleges of technology – Al Musannah, Shinas and Nizwa – and technicians from the Vocational College, Ibri.

The Business Studies Department organised a get-together event on Wednesday from 12:30 pm to 13:30 pm, at the VIP room, to celebrate the completion of semester II and get ready for the summer semester. The event was attended by the Dean, Assistant Dean for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Head of Business Studies Department, and faculty members. Mr Mohammed Al-Sakiti, HRM lecturer, gave a greeting speech to the attendees. Then, business faculty members provided a gift to Mr Mohammed Al-Sakiti wishing him a very happy married life. The event was ended by having a buffet with a variety of dishes.

 The Health and Safety committee of Ibri College of Technology organised a fire safety induction programme on 20 April 2019 to newly-joined staff in this academic year 2018-19. Dr K. Elangovan, Chairman, Health and Safety Committee, focused on the awareness on fire safety and first aid procedures to be fallowed in case of fire, to the new staff members. He briefed about different types of fire extinguishers available in the college buildings and how to use them during   emergency situations. First aid procedures to be fallowed in case of fire injuries were also presented. In continuation of the presentation, new staff members were given hands-on training to handle fire extinguishers on an artificially created fire.
